Volwassen hartspiercellen zijn primaire cellen die kunnen worden geïsoleerd uit dierlijke harten en gekweekt voor meerdere dagen. Binnen deze cultuur periode adenovirale gentransfer kan gebruikt worden om genetisch gecodeerd biosensoren (GEBS) of TL-fusie-eiwitten uit te drukken. Beide benaderingen laten cellulaire onderzoeken door middel van confocale microscopie.
