Het protocol beschrijft een efficiënt en reproduceerbaar modelsysteem om te studeren herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) latentie en reactivatie. De test maakt gebruik van homogene sympathiek neuron culturen en maakt het mogelijk om moleculaire dissectie van virus-neuron interacties met behulp van een scala aan hulpmiddelen met inbegrip van RNA-interferentie en expressie van recombinante eiwitten.
