Sjukdomsframkallande mutationer i aktin kan förändra cytoskeletal funktion. Cytoskelettala dynamik kvantifieras genom avbildning av fluorescerande taggade proteiner med hjälp av total inre fluorescensmikroskopi. Som ett exempel har den cytoskelettprotein, Aip1p, förändrad lokalisering och rörelse i celler som uttrycker den mutanta aktin isoformen, R256H.
