Kortikale nettverk styres av en liten, men mangfoldig sett av hemmende interneurons. Funksjonell undersøkelse av interneurons krever derfor målrettet opptak og streng identifikasjon. Beskrevet her er en kombinert tilnærming med hel-celle opptak fra én eller postsynaptisk-koblede par av nevroner med intracellulære merking, post-hoc morfologisk og immuncytokjemisk analyse.
