תפקידו של מבחר (הפרדה מרחבית) בתרחישים האבולוציונית ניתן לבדוק באמצעות מערכות חיידקים פשוטה במעבדה המאפשרים נשלט התאמת הפריסה המרחבית. על ידי שינוי צפיפות התאים המייסדים, רמות מבחר שונות ניתן מדמיינות באמצעות זני חיידקים שכותרתו fluorescently ב biofilms המושבה של Bacillus subtilis.
