RNA haarspelden en lussen kunnen fungeren als primers voor reverse transcriptie (RT) bij afwezigheid van sequentie-specifieke primers, interfereren met de studie van overlappende antisense transcripten. We hebben een techniek ontwikkeld die in staat is om streng-specifiek RNA te identificeren, en we hebben het gebruikt om HIV-1 antisense Protein ASP te bestuderen.
