Het protocol beschrijft een snelle, hoge doorvoer, betrouwbare, goedkope en onpartijdige test voor het efficiënt bepalen van cellulaire levensvatbaarheid. Deze test is vooral handig wanneer de mitochondriën van cellen zijn beschadigd, wat interfereert met andere tests. De test maakt gebruik van geautomatiseerd tellen van cellen bevlekt met twee nucleaire kleurstoffen - Hoechst 33342 en propidium jodide.
