A capacidade dos bacteriófagos de mover o DNA entre as células bacterianas os torna ferramentas eficazes para a manipulação genética de seus hospedeiros bacterianos. Apresenta-se aqui uma metodologia para induzir, recuperar e utilizar φBB-1, um bacteriófago de Borrelia burgdorferi, para transduzir DNA heterólogo entre diferentes cepas da espiroqueta da doença de Lyme.
