Transthoracale (TTE) en transesofageale (TEE) echocardiografie vormen de basis beeldvormingsinstrumenten voor interatriaal septumonderzoek. Driedimensionale (3D) TEE biedt incrementele informatie bij de beoordeling van het interatriale septum. Verdere geavanceerde echocardiografietechnieken met behulp van spikkelvolgende echocardiografie worden toegepast voor gevoelige volumetrische en functionele beoordeling van de hartkamers.
