Proteom analyse av cochlea sensorisk epitel kan være utfordrende på grunn av sin lille størrelse og fordi membran proteiner er vanskelige å isolere og identifisere. Både membran og oppløselige proteiner kan identifiseres ved å kombinere flere preparative metoder og separasjonsteknikker sammen med høy-oppløsningsmassespektroskopi.
