We beschrijven de stappen voor de percutane implantatie van de intra-aortaballonpomp (IABP), een mechanisch ondersteuningsapparaat voor de bloedsomloop. Het werkt door tegenpulsatie, opblazen bij het begin van diastole, diastolische aortadruk vergroten en de coronaire bloedstroom en systemische perfusie verbeteren, en leeglopen vóór systole, waardoor de linkerventrikelnaspanning wordt verminderd.
