Vi presenterar ett protokoll för att elektrofysiologiskt karakterisera bistabila fotopigment: (i) utnyttja laddningsförskjutningarna inom fotopigmentmolekylerna efter fotonabsorption och deras enorma mängd i fotoreceptorerna, och (ii) utnyttja absorptionsspektraskillnaderna mellan rhodopsin och metarhodopsin fotopigmenttillstånd. Dessa protokoll är användbara för att screena för mutationer som påverkar bistabila fotopigmentsystem.
