איזון יריעת פני השטח של התליון המיושם עם החלפה מרובת תת-פאזות, המכונה OCTOPUS, מאפשר לחקות את תנאי העיכול על ידי החלפת תת-פאזה רציפה של התמיסה המקורית בתפזורת עם נוזלים מדומים במערכת העיכול. העיכול המדומה במבחנה מנוטר על ידי רישום באתרו של המתח הבין-פאזי של השכבה הבין-מרחבית המעוכלת.
