A infecção pelo vírus da gripe A (IAV) ativa as caspases que clivam o hospedeiro e as proteínas virais, que, por sua vez, têm funções pró e antivirais. Empregando-se inibidores, interferência de RNA, mutagênese sítio-dirigida e técnicas de western blotting e RT-qPCR, foram identificadas caspases em células de mamíferos infectadas que clivam a cortactina do hospedeiro e as histonas desacetilases.
