Assessing tympanic membrane temperature involves using a tympanic membrane thermometer (TMT). Here is a step-by-step guide:
Step 1: Begin by practicing good hand hygiene to prevent the transmission of microorganisms.
Step 2: Turn on the thermometer and wait until the ready sign appears on the screen to ensure accurate measurement.
Step 3: Slide the probe cover in place to prevent cross-contamination.
Step 4: Instruct the patient to tilt their head to the side for comfort and check for cerumen accumulation in the ear canal. Cerumen can obstruct the probe's lens cover. If necessary, switch to the opposite ear.
Step 5: Gently pull the pinna up and back in adult patients to straighten the ear canal to ensure accurate measurement. Then, insert the probe into the external ear, angling it toward the patient's jawline. This positioning provides maximum exposure of the tympanic membrane and proper probe placement.
Step 6: Press the scan button on the equipment and maintain the probe in position until an audible signal indicates completion, revealing the patient's temperature on the display unit.
Step 7: Remove the probe cover and dispose of it properly to prevent cross-contamination.
Step 8: Practice hand hygiene again to prevent the spread of any potential cross-infection and help the patient get comfortable.
