Pre-implantatie embryo's kunnen worden ingevroren na plaatsing in een hypertone cryoprotectief oplossing voor cellulaire uitdroging veroorzaken. Bij evenwicht, is het ijs kristalvorming geïnduceerd in de oplossing rond de embryo. Verdere uitdroging optreedt als het embryo langzaam afgekoeld tot temperaturen onder nul alvorens zich in vloeibare stikstof voor opslag.
