Darmepitheel verleent niet alleen opname van voedingsstoffen, maar ook bescherming tegen schadelijke stoffen. De apicale meest epitheliale intercellulaire junctie, d.w.z. de tight junction, reguleert paracellulaire opgeloste stof en ionenpermeabiliteit. Hier wordt een protocol beschreven voor de bereiding van mucosale vellen en beoordeling van de ionenselectiviteit van tight junctions met behulp van Ussing-kamertechniek.
