Synoviale vloeistofanalyse onder doorgegeven, gepolariseerde en gecompenseerde lichtmicroscopie wordt gebruikt om de inflammatoire of niet-inflammatoire aard van een monster te evalueren door middel van eenvoudige stappen. Het is vooral nuttig bij artrose om calciumkristallen te detecteren en een ernstigere subset van artrose te identificeren.
