Here is a clear and concise guide for evaluating temperature using a tympanic membrane thermometer.

The first step is hand hygiene, which helps prevent the spread of microorganisms.

Next, remove the thermometer from the charging unit and switch it on.

Now, slide in the probe cover to avoid cross-infection.

Instruct the patient to tilt their head to the side and observe if there is any cerumen accumulation in the ear canal, as this may obstruct the probe's lens cover.

For an adult, pull the pinna up and back to straighten the ear canal. This method allows maximum exposure of the tympanic membrane.

To avoid ambient temperature impacting the readings, carefully insert the probe into the external ear canal to achieve a perfect seal.

Then, press the scan button and hold the probe in position until a beep sound indicates completion.

The patient's temperature will appear on the display unit.

Now, remove the probe cover and discard

Assist the patient to a comfortable position, replace the equipment, and perform hand hygiene.

Lastly, document the findings.

11.13:

Assessing Body Temperature – Tympanic membrane

Assessing tympanic membrane temperature involves using a tympanic membrane thermometer (TMT). Here is a step-by-step guide:

Step 1: Begin by practicing good hand hygiene to prevent the transmission of microorganisms.

Step 2: Turn on the thermometer and wait until the ready sign appears on the screen to ensure accurate measurement.

Step 3: Slide the probe cover in place to prevent cross-contamination.

Step 4: Instruct the patient to tilt their head to the side for comfort and check for cerumen accumulation in the ear canal. Cerumen can obstruct the probe's lens cover. If necessary, switch to the opposite ear.

Step 5: Gently pull the pinna up and back in adult patients to straighten the ear canal to ensure accurate measurement. Then, insert the probe into the external ear, angling it toward the patient's jawline. This positioning provides maximum exposure of the tympanic membrane and proper probe placement.

Step 6: Press the scan button on the equipment and maintain the probe in position until an audible signal indicates completion, revealing the patient's temperature on the display unit.

Step 7: Remove the probe cover and dispose of it properly to prevent cross-contamination.

Step 8: Practice hand hygiene again to prevent the spread of any potential cross-infection and help the patient get comfortable.

Step 9: Document the findings to ensure accurate record-keeping and continuity of care.
