Den Miller-Urey eksperimentet var en banebrytende studie om abiotiske syntese av organiske forbindelser med mulig relevans for livets opprinnelse. Enkle gasser ble introdusert i et glass apparat og utsatt for en elektrisk utladning, simulere effektene av lyn i primordial Jordens atmosfære-hav system. Forsøket ble gjennomført i en uke, etter som de prøver samlet inn fra det ble analysert for de kjemiske byggesteinene i livet.
