Human infektion med Entamoeba histolytica fører til amoebiasis, en væsentlig årsag til diarré i tropiske lande. Infektion initieres af patogen interaktioner med tarmepitelceller, provokerer åbningen af celle-celle-kontakter, og dermed diarré, undertiden efterfulgt af lever-infektion. Denne artikel indeholder en model til at vurdere de tidlige vært-patogen interaktioner at forbedre vores forståelse af amoebiasis patogenese.
