Monitoring hersenactiviteit buiten het lab zonder fysieke beperkingen presenteert methodologische uitdagingen. Een fiberless werd wearable functionele Near Infrared Spectroscopy (fNIRS) systeem gebruikt om de hersenactiviteit tijdens een ecologische prospectief geheugen taak te meten. Er werd aangetoond dat dit systeem kan worden gebruikt om hersenactiviteit tijdens niet-laboratorium gebaseerde experimenten volgen.
