Dit protocol wordt gebruikt bij het vaststellen en onderhouden van gnotobiotische Amerikaanse kakkerlakken (Periplaneta americana) door de eigevallen (oothecae) vóór het uitkomen te steriliseren. Deze gnotobiotische insecten bevatten hun verticaal overgedragen Blattabacterium endosymbionts maar hebben axenische darmen.
