Y-mazen stellen onderzoekers in staat om de relevantie te bepalen van specifieke stimuli die diergedrag stimuleren, vooral geïsoleerde chemische signalen uit verschillende bronnen. Zorgvuldig ontwerp en planning kunnen robuuste gegevens opleveren (bijv. discriminatie, mate van exploratie, tal van gedragingen). Dit experimentele apparaat kan krachtig inzicht geven in gedrags- en ecologische vragen.
