Escherichia coli, doğum sırasında bakterileri yutan yenidoğanlarda sepsise neden olur. E. coli'nin enterik yoldan kan dolaşımına seyahat etme kabiliyetinde yer alan süreç tam olarak anlaşılamamıştır. Bu in vitro model, E. coli suşlarının bağırsak epitel hücrelerinden geçme yeteneğini değerlendirir.
