Bakteriofagens evne til at flytte DNA mellem bakterieceller gør dem til effektive værktøjer til genetisk manipulation af deres bakterielle værter. Præsenteret her er en metode til at inducere, genoprette og bruge φBB-1, en bakteriofag af Borrelia burgdorferi, til at transducere heterologt DNA mellem forskellige stammer af Lyme-sygdommen spirochete.
