זיהום בנגיף שפעת A (IAV) מפעיל את הקספאזות שמבקעות חלבונים פונדקאיים ונוגפיים, אשר בתורם הם בעלי תפקידים פרו-ויראליים. על ידי שימוש במעכבים, הפרעות RNA, מוטגנזה מכוונת אתר, וטכניקות כתם מערביות ו- RT-qPCR, זוהו קספאזות בתאי יונקים נגועים המבקעים קורטקטין מארח והיסטון דאקטילאזות.
