إن قدرة البكتيريا على نقل الحمض النووي بين الخلايا البكتيرية تجعلها أدوات فعالة للتلاعب الجيني بمضيفيها البكتيريين. تظهر هنا منهجية لتحريض واستعادة واستخدام φBB-1 ، وهي بكتيريا من Borrelia burgdorferi ، لتحويل الحمض النووي غير المتجانس بين سلالات مختلفة من مرض لايم spirochete.
