מדידת מהירות גל דופק (PWV) מעריכה קשיות עורקים על ידי מערכת מבוססת tonometry המודדת את המהירות שבה גל לחץ הדם נוסע לאורך עץ העורקים, בדרך כלל דומים לזמן שלוקח גל זה לנסוע מאב העורקים יורד (באמצעות התרדמה עורק כתחליף) לעורק הירך. PWV תרדמה-הירך מגדיל שניים עד פי שלושה על פני תוחלת החיים של המבוגרים.
