She holds joint appointments at the Departments of Psychological & Brain Sciences and Communication Sciences & Disorders. She received her MD in Basic Medicine from Shanghai Medical College of Fudan University and her PhD in Neuroscience from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, co-mentored by Drs. Susan M. Garnsey and Cynthia L. Fisher. Then she was trained at Dr. John Gabrieli's laboratory at Massachusetts Institute of Technology as a postdoctoral researcher before she started her faculty position in 2017.Dr. Qi's research goal is to understand the neurobiological organization of language in the human brain, how that organization changes from childhood through adulthood, how it is disrupted in major neurodevelopmental disorders of language (autism spectrum disorder, dyslexia, language impairment, and schizophrenia), and how knowledge of that organization may enhance language learning and language intervention. She uses a variety of behavioral and neuroimaging techniques to study the relationship between language learning, cognitive skills, and brain development in both children and adults. The research in her Language Acquisition and Brain Laboratory is supported by NIH, NSF, and Brain & Behavior Research Foundation.
