Die Ratten-Carotis-Arterie Ballon-Verletzung imitiert das klinische Angioplastie-Verfahren zur Wiederherstellung des Blutflusses in atherosklerotischen Gefäßen. Dieses Modell induziert die arterielle Verletzungsreaktion, indem es die arterielle Wand distend und die Intimschicht von Endothelzellen denudiert, was letztlich zu einer Umgestaltung und einer intimalen hyperplastischen Reaktion führt.
