Große Tiermodelle spielen eine wesentliche Rolle in der präklinischen Transplantationsforschung. Aufgrund seiner Ähnlichkeiten mit dem klinischen Aufbau bietet das in diesem Artikel beschriebene Schweinemodell der orthotopischen Nieren-Autotransplantation eine hervorragende in vivo-Einstellung für die Erprobung von Organkonservierungstechniken und therapeutischen Interventionen.
