Unngåelse er sentral i kronisk smertehemming, men tilstrekkelige paradigmer for å undersøke smerterelatert unngåelse mangler. Derfor utviklet vi et paradigme som gjør det mulig å undersøke hvordan smerterelatert unngåelsesatferd læres (oppkjøp), sprer seg til andre stimuli (generalisering), kan reduseres (utryddelse), og hvordan det senere kan dukke opp igjen (spontan utvinning).
