Bij muizen, is de mogelijkheid om feromonen te detecteren hoofdzakelijk gemedieerd door de vomeronasale orgaan (VNO). Hier is een acute weefsel stuk voorbereiding van VNO voor het uitvoeren van calcium beeldvorming beschreven. Deze fysiologische aanpak maakt het mogelijk waarnemingen van subpopulaties en / of individuele neuronen in een levend weefsel en is handig voor het receptor-ligand identificatie.
