العصب البصري transection هو النموذج المستخدم على نطاق واسع من اصابة الجهاز العصبي المركزي للبالغين. تسعين في المئة من خلايا الشبكية العقدة (RGCs) التي هي محاور عصبية مقطوع تماما (axotomy) يموت في غضون 14 يوما بعد axotomy. هذا النموذج هو قابل للتلاعب بسهولة تجريبية وقابلة للتكرار للغاية.
