In vitro modellen van coronaire angiogenese kan worden gebruikt voor de ontdekking van de cellulaire en moleculaire mechanismen van coronaire angiogenese. In vitro explantculturen van sinusvenosus- en endocardiumweefsels laten een robuuste groei zien in reactie op VEGF-A en vertonen een vergelijkbaar patroon van COUP-TFII-expressie als in vivo.
