Een methode om het tijdsverloop van ethanol concentratie in de hersenen van ratten te bepalen tijdens operant ethanol zelftoediening beschreven. Gaschromatografie met vlamionisatiedetectie wordt gebruikt om ethanol te kwantificeren in het dialysaat monsters, omdat het de gevoeligheid vereist voor kleine volumes die worden gegenereerd.
