Ex vivo hersenplakken kunnen worden gebruikt om de effecten van vluchtige anesthetica op opgeroepen reacties op afferente inputs te bestuderen. Optogenetica wordt gebruikt om zelfstandig thalamocorticale en corticocorticale afferente stoffen te activeren voor niet-primaire neocortex, en synaptische en netwerkresponsen worden gemoduleerd met isofluraan.
